What is Planet Zoo 2?
Planet Zoo 2 is a construction and management simulation developed and published by Frontier Developments for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It is the sequel to 2019's Planet Zoo, keeping the same premise of designing, building, and running a zoo while balancing animal welfare, guest satisfaction, and finances. The core gameplay loop carries over from the original: players lay paths and fences, place habitats suited to a given species, hire staff, and set prices and amenities to keep visitors happy, while a welfare system tracks each animal's comfort and social needs. What sets the sequel apart is the expanded scope of what can be built. It introduces fully aquatic species for the first time, housed in aquariums with viewing panels, along with flying species kept in aviaries built from barriers, poles, and a mesh canopy guests can walk beneath. Animal rendering and behavior have also been overhauled, with upgraded fur, feather, and scale detail and more elaborate interactions, alongside a mood-based "living UI" that reads how individual animals are feeling. Beyond traditional exhibits, players can take part in conservation projects, restoring and populating wildlife reserves separate from their commercial zoo. The game keeps the same three modes as its predecessor: a guided Career mode with scenario objectives, a Sandbox mode with unrestricted building tools, and a Franchise mode tied to a shared network for trading animals with other players. The Frontier Workshop also returns, letting players share custom buildings and habitat designs across platforms. Planet Zoo 2 is single-player, with no co-op or competitive multiplayer; its social elements are limited to Franchise-mode trading and Workshop sharing. It suits players drawn to detailed creature care and open-ended building, with sessions ranging from short habitat tweaks to multi-hour zoo projects depending on the mode chosen.
