From early access darling to full release

Enshrouded first showed up in Steam Early Access back in January 2024, and over the next two and a half years it quietly became one of the better survival games around, pulling in more than 5 million players along the way. On October 15, 2026, Keen Games finally shipped version 1.0, closing out the early access run on PC and launching alongside a PlayStation 5 version.

The pitch hasn't changed much: you're a Flameborn, basically the last hope of a dying people, dropped into the ruined kingdom of Embervale. A corrupting fog called the Shroud has swallowed most of the map, and you dig through ruins, fight through it in timed bursts, and slowly push it back while rebuilding settlements with a genuinely deep voxel building system.

What 1.0 actually changes

Keen Games used the run-up to launch to retune fights players had been complaining about since early access, add more customization and traversal options, and rework how the game renders its world (it moved from regular polygons to a "brick" based system to push view distances further without tanking performance). None of that is the kind of headline-grabbing new biome or class, but it's the unglamorous stuff that usually gets skipped on the way out of early access, and reviewers seem to be noticing.

Where it stands

  • Co-op for up to 16 players, or solo if you'd rather deal with the Shroud alone.
  • Three combat styles to lean into: Wizard, Ranger, and Warrior.
  • Voxel base building that lets you shelter NPCs and unlock their workshops.
  • Currently $35.99 on Steam, a 10% launch discount off the $39.99 list price that runs until October 29.
  • Sitting at roughly 86% positive across close to 100,000 reviews, rated Very Positive.

Who it's for

If you bounced off Valheim or Palworld because you wanted more building depth and a bit more structure to the combat, Enshrouded landing at 1.0 with its rough edges sanded down is a good excuse to finally dig in, solo or with a full squad.

Our take

Early access survival games have a bad habit of either stalling out forever or rushing a 1.0 that alienates the community that got them there. Enshrouded doing the opposite, five million players deep and still holding Very Positive reviews right at the finish line, is the kind of quietly competent launch that deserves more attention than it's getting. It's also a decent signal for Keen Games as a studio: sticking to a long early access cycle and actually using the feedback, rather than treating it as a marketing phase, paid off here.
