What is Enshrouded?
Enshrouded is a survival action role-playing game developed and published by the German studio Keen Games, previously known for Portal Knights. Set in the open world of Embervale, it places players in a fantasy landscape partially blanketed by a toxic mist called the Shroud, which hides dangerous creatures and valuable loot behind a ticking clock that forces players to retreat before the mist takes its toll. Played from a third-person perspective, the core loop blends base-building and crafting with exploration and combat. Players gather resources to construct and expand a home base, grow or forage food, and manage hunger and thirst, both of which influence combat performance. Venturing into the Shroud yields treasure and rare materials but requires careful time management. Combat allows dodging and parrying, and players develop their character along melee, magic, or ranged paths, each offering its own specializations. A glider and a grappling hook let players traverse Embervale's cliffs and ruins quickly, while summonable non-player characters unlock new crafting recipes and quests as a settlement grows. Compared with other survival games, Enshrouded is built to be more approachable: its combat takes cues from Soulsborne titles but is noticeably gentler, and dying costs players their gathered raw materials rather than their crafted gear or equipped items. The developers have pointed to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Valheim as influences. Enshrouded can be played solo or in cooperative multiplayer with up to sixteen people, making it suited to both solitary base-builders and groups tackling the Shroud together.
