What is 007 First Light?

007 First Light is a third-person stealth-action game developed by IO Interactive, the Danish studio behind the Hitman series, running on the studio's own Glacier engine. It presents an original origin story for James Bond, starting with him as a Royal Navy officer in training who disobeys orders to stop terrorists seizing an MI6 research station in Iceland. The incident draws MI6's attention, and Bond is brought in and trained at a facility in Malta while working to earn 00 status and uncover a larger conspiracy that plays out across locations such as a hotel and a nightclub. The cast includes M, Moneypenny, a mentor named Greenway, and antagonists including the black-market dealer Bawma and a rival operative known as 009. The gameplay loop combines open-ended stealth sandboxes in the vein of Hitman with combat and vehicle sequences the studio's earlier games didn't attempt. Many levels can be tackled through multiple routes, using a scan ability to flag threats and interact remotely with systems like CCTV, along with non-lethal tactics such as darts, bluffing past guards, and pickpocketing for resources. Gadgets run on collected electric and chemical charges, while combat can escalate into a lethal "License to Kill" mode once armed enemies intend to kill Bond, mixing melee combos and counters, cover-based gunfights, and car chases into the stealth design. An optional Tactical Simulation mode adds scored challenge missions with unlockable rewards. First Light is built around a single-player campaign, with no multiplayer or co-op modes, and reported playthrough times average around 20 hours. It is aimed at players who enjoy methodical, systems-driven stealth games and are curious about a rougher, less seasoned version of Bond than the one usually seen on screen.
