What is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE?

Final Fantasy Resonance is a story-driven, turn-based role-playing game developed by Square Enix and LANCARSE Ltd. and published by Square Enix, released in October 2026 for PC and current-generation consoles. It is built around the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, substantially reworked rather than ported, and follows three young travelers, Rain, Lasswell, and Fina, from the crystal-protected kingdom of Grandshelt as they are drawn into a conflict involving airships, espers, moogles, and a threat that endangers their world. The game is notable as the first mainline-style Final Fantasy release built in Square Enix's HD-2D visual style, which layers detailed pixel art characters and environments with modern lighting and a dynamic camera, while key cutscenes and certain abilities switch to fuller 3D rendering. Combat uses a timeline-based turn order and a stagger system: hitting an enemy with an effective element fills its stagger gauge, leaving it unable to act and more vulnerable, which grants the party bonus turns and opens the way to larger Resonance combination attacks. Parties can also call on Visions, versions of familiar characters from earlier Final Fantasy games, each bringing distinct skills that expand how battles and party setups can be built. Outside the main story, players can take on optional encounters such as Gilgamesh, a colosseum of tough monsters, and a late-game fight against Ultima Weapon. The game is entirely single-player, with no co-op or competitive multiplayer modes, and is aimed at RPG fans who enjoy tactical, turn-based combat and classic Final Fantasy lore. Outlets covering the game have estimated the main story takes roughly 30 to 40 hours to finish, with additional time for optional content.
