Battlefield 6 arrived with the kind of marketing blitz only EA can muster, promising a return to the series' chaotic, destructible roots after a rocky few entries. A year on from its October 2025 launch, the Steam reviews paint a game that nailed a lot of the fundamentals but has already worn out some of the goodwill it started with. Out of 186,891 reviews on Steam the game sits at "Mixed," and the ten most recent reviews we read back that up almost exactly down the middle: five thumbs up, five thumbs down.

Pros

  • The core gunplay still lands. Several reviewers, including longtime series fans who say they've played every Battlefield since 1942, describe the shooting as fun and "arcadey" in a good way - quick to pick up, satisfying to master.
  • Mode variety carries matches. Team Deathmatch, Breakthrough, and Conquest all get name-checked as reasons to keep queuing, giving both quick skirmishes and full-scale battles a home in the same game.
  • It hooks people hard. Two of the ten reviewers we looked at have logged well over 100 hours already (one past 8,800 minutes, nearly 150 hours), which says something about how compelling a good session can be even for critics of the game's other choices.

Cons

  • Launch-day energy has faded fast. More than one high-playtime reviewer specifically frames the opening weeks as "the peak," describing a steady decline in excitement and population since then rather than a game that's grown with its community.
  • Gunplay feel complaints surface in the negative reviews too - a contradiction worth noting, since the same mechanic that one half calls satisfying, the other half says "doesn't feel right," particularly around weapon handling in certain modes - a sign that the game's balance may land very differently depending on the weapon loadout and playstyle you gravitate toward.
  • A popular mode, Gauntlet, was reportedly shut down, and the reviewers who brought it up weren't shy about their frustration - it's the kind of content removal that reads as a step backward rather than forward.
  • Access friction shows up too: one reviewer trying the game through a "free weekend" trial complained they couldn't access the campaign at all, which undercuts the pitch for newcomers trying to decide if the full purchase is worth it.
  • A couple of the negative reviews are blunt one-word dismissals ("Slop" among them) rather than detailed breakdowns, which suggests at least part of the negativity is frustration and burnout talking rather than a specific, fixable bug list - worth keeping in mind when you weigh how much stock to put in the lower scores.

Performance & PC

Battlefield 6 is not a light install. The minimum spec asks for an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, with 55GB of storage; the recommended spec steps up to a Core i7-10700 or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16GB RAM, and an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT, plus 80GB free. It also requires TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, and HVCI/VBS enabled - standard for EA's kernel-level anti-cheat approach these days, but worth checking before buying if you're on an older or custom-built rig, since it can block the game from launching at all until those settings are switched on in BIOS. None of the ten reviews we analyzed mentioned crashes, freezes, or Steam Deck/Linux issues specifically, so on the stability front the game seems to be behaving itself for most players - the complaints in this batch are about design and content decisions, not technical breakdowns. That's a meaningful distinction for anyone shopping around: a game that runs fine but makes some unpopular calls is a very different purchase decision than one that's still being patched for basic stability.

How it compares

Gears of War: E-Day trades Battlefield 6's sprawling, large-scale chaos for a tighter, scripted third-person campaign, so it's a better pick if you want a war story over a sandbox. ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE is worth a look if what you actually want from a military action game is the sky rather than the trenches. WARDOGS is chasing a similar combined-arms, large-scale military fantasy as Battlefield 6, though it's still in Early Access and considerably rougher around the edges right now.

Summary

Battlefield 6 is a genuinely fun shooter wrapped around some frustrating decisions, and the review split we found - five positive, five negative, almost perfectly even - is a fair summary of where the game actually stands right now rather than a fluke. The shooting feels good, the mode lineup is strong on paper, and dedicated players are clearly getting their money's worth in hours played. But launch momentum has visibly cooled, content like Gauntlet has been cut rather than expanded, and the trial experience doesn't do a great job selling the campaign to newcomers. At its current discounted price it's an easier recommendation than it would be at full $69.99, but go in expecting a game that's still finding its footing rather than the finished, triumphant comeback the marketing promised. If you've got friends already playing and you're after fast, satisfying firefights, there's a good game in here. If you're hoping for a long-term live-service home that keeps adding rather than cutting modes, the Gauntlet removal is a reason to wait and watch how the post-launch roadmap shakes out before committing at full price.
