Jagex spent years teasing what a non-MMO RuneScape game might look like, and Dragonwilds is the answer: a co-op survival-crafting game set on the long-lost continent of Ashenfall, where dragons have woken up and nobody's thrilled about it. The game hit its full 1.0 launch on September 15, bringing console versions and crossplay along with it after a stretch in Early Access. Having gone through ten of the most recent Steam reviews, the picture that emerges is a genuinely ambitious game that still trips over its own feet often enough to annoy the people playing it the most.

Pros

  • The core loop of skilling, building a base, and fighting your way across Ashenfall lands well for players who wanted RuneScape's progression systems without the MMO baggage — more than one reviewer called it a refreshing take on the survival-crafting genre.
  • It clearly hooks people long-term: several of the reviews we looked at came from players well past the 50-hour mark, including one with over 130 hours in who had nothing but enthusiasm left to give.
  • Co-op scaling for base defense and exploration gets specific praise, with reviewers calling out how well it holds up playing in a group rather than solo.
  • Jagex is clearly treating this as a long-term platform rather than a one-and-done release, with a full skill-tree-to-99 pass already in at launch and a stated content roadmap running well into 2027.

Cons

  • The difficulty curve spikes hard and early — multiple reviewers singled out the first proper dungeon for throwing too many enemies at once with little room to breathe, especially for players expecting the gentler pacing of regular RuneScape.
  • Death is punishing in a way that frustrates rather than thrills: losing your loot and having to run back for it repeatedly was a recurring complaint, with a couple of reviewers saying it killed their motivation to keep going near the start of the game.
  • Grinding feels like it stops paying off once you move to a new region, with gear and materials you worked for becoming "useless" in reviewers' own words almost as soon as you progress.
  • Melee combat specifically gets called out as unsatisfying, and late-game areas (reviewers point to the desert map and the content past Act 3) are described as noticeably less polished than the earlier parts of the game.
  • A few reviewers flagged crashes during boss fights, and others noted that once you're geared up, base raids stop scaling with your progress and become a non-threat rather than ongoing tension.

Performance & PC

On paper, Dragonwilds isn't demanding: the minimum spec asks for a Core i3-8100 or Ryzen 5 1600, 8GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 5600 XT, while the recommended spec bumps that to a Core i5-10600 or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 2070 or RX 5700 XT. That's a comfortably mid-range bar for a game built around big co-op bases and dragon fights. In practice, stability isn't spotless — crashes during boss encounters came up more than once among the reviews we read, and that lines up with Jagex's own admission, shortly after 1.0 launched, that they were dealing with a save-corruption bug (more on that below). Steam doesn't list a Deck compatibility rating for the game yet, so Linux/Deck players should treat that as an open question rather than a confirmed yes.

What changed since launch

Just a few days after the September 15 launch, Jagex publicly acknowledged a save-corruption issue affecting some players, mostly reported on console. The studio said its "entire QA and development team" was working on it, and deliberately held off rushing out a fix that might risk further corrupting save files or disconnecting players from their worlds — aiming instead for a properly tested patch rather than a quick band-aid. It's not a great look days after a full release, but it's a reasonable way to handle a save-integrity bug, and it's worth knowing about before you sink serious hours in. Beyond the firefighting, Jagex has also been explicit about treating this as a live game: a "Luminance Update" adding a new Prayer skill and expanded regions is slated for December, with a bigger "Shadows of Ashenfall" expansion and a Hardcore mode planned for 2027.

How it compares

Stardew Valley is the gentler cousin here — similar farming-and-progression DNA, but without the punishing death penalties or combat demands, so it's the pick if you want cozy over challenging. AION 2 is chasing a similar idea from the other direction, an established MMO brand branching into new territory, though it's free-to-play and leans harder into traditional MMO structure than Dragonwilds' survival sandbox. Dimraeth, which launched the same week in a similarly rough-edged state, is a useful point of comparison for anyone deciding between two new action-RPGs with Early Access energy — it's darker and more combat-focused, where Dragonwilds spreads itself across skilling, building, and fighting all at once.

Summary

Dragonwilds is Jagex taking a real swing at a genre it has no obvious business being good at, and more often than not it connects — the skilling-meets-survival loop has real fans, and the people who've put serious hours in are mostly still having a good time. But the rough edges are real too: a punishing early game, grind that stops feeling rewarding, late-game content that's visibly less finished, and a save-corruption scare just days into its full release. None of that is fatal, and Jagex's track record of ongoing updates suggests a lot of this gets smoothed out, but it's not quite there yet at full price. Worth playing, just maybe not worth buying the moment you read this.
