What is AION 2?
AION 2 is a free-to-play, open-world MMORPG developed and published by NC (NCSoft), built in Unreal Engine 5 as a sequel to the 2008 original AION. The story picks up roughly two centuries after the first game, following the destruction of the Tower of Eternity that once separated the rival Elyos and Asmodian nations. With that barrier gone, both factions must contend with a resurgent Balaur threat across the world of Atreia, now rendered many times larger than its predecessor. The core gameplay loop revolves around questing, faction warfare, and instanced content, but its defining feature is full three-dimensional flight woven into nearly every encounter. Zones, dungeons, and battles are designed around vertical movement and aerial combat rather than treating flight as a travel convenience, which shapes how players approach both PvE fights and open PvP skirmishes. Players choose from eight classes with extensive customization options, and progress through solo missions alongside small-group dungeons and larger raids, while underwater areas add another layer to exploration. Multiplayer structures include cooperative PvE content for small parties and raid groups, arena-style PvP duels and team matches, and large-scale faction-versus-faction warfare tied to the Elyos-Asmodian-Balaur conflict. As an MMO, it has no fixed single-player campaign length; progression is ongoing and community-driven. AION 2 is aimed at MMORPG players drawn to faction rivalry, aerial and vertical combat design, and long-term character building, and it launches on PC through Steam and NC's PURPLE platform, with a global release scheduled for October 5, 2026.
