What is Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play team-based shooter built around the Marvel Comics universe, developed and published by NetEase Games. Two squads of six face off in objective-based matches, pushing payloads, capturing points, or escorting targets across maps drawn from locations across Marvel lore, including stylized takes on Tokyo, Wakanda, and Asgard. Unlike many hero shooters, battles are viewed from a third-person perspective, giving a clearer view of each character's powers and positioning than a first-person view would. Every hero is sorted into one of three roles: Vanguard, frontline tanks who absorb damage and control space; Duelist, damage dealers focused on eliminating enemies; and Strategist, healers and utility characters who keep the team alive. The roster draws from across Marvel's comics, pairing well-known Avengers and X-Men with more niche picks such as Rocket Raccoon, Magik, and Jeff the Land Shark. A signature mechanic layered on top of the standard shooter loop is the Team-Up ability: specific pairs or trios of heroes can combine their powers mid-fight for bonus effects, such as Rocket riding on Groot's shoulder or Hulk charging Iron Man's armor, which pushes players toward coordinating team composition rather than just picking a favorite character. Many maps also include destructible terrain that can be reshaped during a fight to open new sightlines or block enemy approaches. Matches are generally short, running in roughly the ten-to-fifteen-minute range, and the game is purely competitive multiplayer with no single-player campaign; players queue into casual or ranked modes against others online. It is aimed at fans of objective-based hero shooters and of Marvel properties generally, with role-based team composition and a large, frequently updated roster as its main hooks for newcomers and genre veterans alike.
