Battlefield 6 is having a weird, busy week

A year after launch, Battlefield 6 is still pulling big crowds on Steam, and this week it's back in the weekly top sellers as a new entry. The reason is a pile-up of news all hitting at once: Season 5 content, a Halloween crossover nobody asked for but everyone's enjoying, a freshly repackaged Game of the Year edition, and a minor cosmetics scandal that's reopened the "is EA using AI art" debate.

Necromorphs are invading REDSEC

The headline feature is a limited-time Dead Space crossover running in the free-to-play REDSEC mode from October 20 through November 10. Battlefield Studios teamed up with Motive, the studio behind the 2023 Dead Space remake, to bring necromorphs, Dead Space weapons, and horror-tinted cosmetics into two new PvE modes.

  • Rush PvE reskins the classic Rush mode with Dead Space environments, weapons, and enemies instead of enemy soldiers.
  • Marker Incursion is a 16-player co-op mode where two teams fight off hordes of infected soldiers and race to destroy the game's "markers" before convergence happens.

The studio is calling it a "non-canon celebration" rather than a tie-in to any specific Dead Space story, which tracks, since the whole thing reads more like a fun Halloween skin than a serious crossover event.

A GOTY edition, and a typo that won't go away

EA also just shipped a Battlefield 6 Game of the Year edition, built around a single GOTY award from a smaller outlet roundup and mostly repackaging the launch Phantom Edition with Shortcut Kits thrown in for every class. It's new key art more than it's new game.

Meanwhile, players noticed one of the newer cosmetics, a McNeil skin, has "SECUTY" printed on the shoulder where "SECURITY" should be. Battlefield Studios says it's fixing the typo in the Season 5, Phase 2 patch in November, and it owned up to letting a known visual error ship without saying anything, which it admitted "creates confusion and erodes trust." It stopped short of confirming or denying generative AI was involved, which hasn't exactly calmed the suspicion, since similar questions came up at launch too.

The numbers right now

Battlefield 6 is still priced at $69.99 on Steam with no discount, sitting at roughly 66% positive across more than 150,000 reviews, which lands closer to "mixed" than "overwhelmingly positive." That hasn't stopped it from pulling tens of thousands of concurrent players most days, with 24-hour peaks well above that.

This one's for people who already own a controller-destroying amount of Battlefield 6 hours and want a reason to log back in for Halloween, not for anyone hoping the core shooter itself changed much this patch.

Our take

Battlefield 6 doesn't need another live-service crossover to stay relevant, but the Dead Space tie-in is a cheap, smart way to keep the free-to-play REDSEC crowd logging in through the holidays. The more telling story is the cosmetics typo: EA staying quiet on whether AI made the asset, paired with a studio that keeps admitting quality slips without naming the cause, says more about where live-service art pipelines are headed than any one skin does.
