A comeback nobody saw coming

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in late 2020 to a famous mess of bugs and broken promises, spent years clawing its way back with patches and the Phantom Liberty expansion, and now it is doing something that would have sounded like a joke a year ago: outselling brand new releases on Steam. In late October it jumped fifteen spots up the weekly chart to land at number three, sitting just behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Phantom Blade Zero, and ahead of its own Phantom Liberty expansion.

What is actually driving it

CD Projekt is not the one pulling the strings here. The spike lines up with the trailer and buzz for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, the Netflix anime sequel from Studio Trigger, which has pulled a wave of curious new players and nostalgic old ones back into Night City. Steam's own numbers backed it up, with the game pulling a 24-hour concurrent player peak north of 141,000 in late October, territory it has not touched in years.

Who it is for

This one is for anyone who bounced off Cyberpunk 2077 at launch or never got around to it at all, since the current build barely resembles the 2020 version and the discount makes now a pretty easy time to find out.

Our take

It says a lot about how much goodwill Cyberpunk 2077 has rebuilt that a cartoon trailer, not a new DLC or a marketing push from CDPR itself, is enough to send it back up the charts. It is also a pretty clean case study in how much a licensed tie-in can move a six-year-old game's sales when the underlying product has actually gotten good. The timing of the discount only sweetens it, though it is worth remembering the price will likely creep back up once the Edgerunners buzz cools off.
