What is Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a first-person military shooter and the 23rd mainline entry in the Call of Duty series, closing out the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series. It is developed primarily by Infinity Ward, with support from several other Activision studios, and published by Activision. The single-player campaign is set in 2026, when North Korea launches an invasion of South Korea following an EMP strike on the city of Hajin. Players follow South Korean Marine Park Hyun-Jun and his squad as they fight to hold a collapsing front line, while a parallel storyline follows fugitive Captain John Price, on the run after killing a US general, as he chases a stolen EMP device through New York, Paris, and Mumbai. The story unfolds across thirteen missions spread over three acts, mixing large-scale battlefield sequences with smaller special-forces style missions. Outside the campaign, the game offers traditional competitive multiplayer with twelve 6v6 maps available at launch alongside larger vehicle-focused Big War maps, familiar modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Hardpoint, and new additions including the dynamically reshaping Kill Block arena. Movement has been reworked with ledge shimmies, mantling, and slide transitions, and progression uses a reworked weapon-attachment and prestige system. A separate DMZ mode, returning from Modern Warfare II, has squads of up to three players scavenging an open exclusion zone for loot and objectives before extracting. The game is aimed at players already invested in Call of Duty's military shooter formula, whether they favor a story-driven campaign, ranked multiplayer, or extraction-style play, and it launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows, and Nintendo Switch 2.
