Set after the fall of the Empire, STAR WARS: Galactic Racer drops you into an unsanctioned underground circuit called the Galactic League, where syndicates bankroll pilots willing to risk it in the Outer Rim's nastiest pod races. It is the pod racing comeback a chunk of the fanbase has been asking for since Episode I, and based on the last ten user reviews on Steam, most players are happy it exists even if it is not without its warts.
Pros
- The core podracing feel lands: reviewers consistently call it fast, loud, and genuinely fun to just sit down and race.
- The championship structure rewards comebacks, so a rough qualifying lap does not necessarily sink your whole run.
- Strong visuals and a decent variety of Outer Rim circuits keep the laps visually interesting.
- Light part-tuning and upgrade systems give the arcade racing a bit of extra depth without overcomplicating it.
Cons
- Handling is described as wonky or floaty by several players, especially in tighter corners.
- AI rubber-banding shows up often enough to annoy reviewers who built a lead honestly only to watch rivals catch back up.
- The story and sidekick banter land flat for most reviewers, with the protagonist hook singled out as weak.
- The campaign is short, with at least one reviewer finishing it in around eight hours.
- There is no local split-screen multiplayer, which stings for a party racer.
- A few longtime fans of the original pod racing games find the loop repetitive after several hours.
Performance & PC
Minimum spec asks for a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 12GB of RAM, and something in the RTX 2060 / Arc A580 / RX 5600 XT class, with 50GB of SSD storage required outright. That is a reasonably demanding ask for an arcade racer, and it lines up with what reviewers report: this is not a game that runs on fumes.
On the stability side, it is a mixed bag rather than a disaster. One reviewer flagged crashes during their seven hours with the game, and another ran into a bug where a part's effect incorrectly ended a race outright. Nobody in the sample reported it as unplayable, but these are real, repeatable complaints rather than one-off noise. Steam Deck compatibility has not been rated yet, so Linux/Deck players should go in expecting the unknown.
How it compares
- Ace Combat 8: Wings of the Eagle scratches a similar arcade-vehicle itch, trading pod racers for jet combat but with the same pick-up-and-play immediacy.
- EA SPORTS FC 27 sits in the same premium-licensed-arcade shelf, charging a similar price for a big-name sports fantasy rather than a Star Wars one.
- WARDOGS offers a scrappier, Early Access take on vehicle-based combat for players who want something in this space without paying full price.
Summary
STAR WARS: Galactic Racer gets the thing that matters most right: the podracing itself feels fast, chaotic, and genuinely Star Wars. Where it stumbles is everywhere around that core loop, a thin story, a short campaign, some real bugs, and a price tag that does not match the amount of content on offer. Fans of the license and of arcade racers will likely have a blast for a weekend; everyone else should probably wait for the inevitable discount.
