What is Dota 2?
Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) where two teams of five players each control a single powerful hero and work to destroy the opposing team's base. Matches take place on a single symmetrical map divided into three lanes, with each side working to push forward while defending their own territory. The core loop involves selecting a hero from a large roster, then earning gold and experience during the match by defeating enemy creatures, heroes, and structures. That gold buys items that make a hero stronger, while experience unlocks new abilities, so a single match is really a compressed character-progression arc that resets every game. Matches typically run 30-60 minutes and require constant coordination with teammates around objectives, map control, and team fights. Dota 2 is built entirely around competitive team play — there's no single-player campaign, though bot matches and tutorials exist for learning the basics. It has one of the deepest hero rosters and item systems in the genre, which gives it significant strategic depth but also a notably steep learning curve compared to other MOBAs. It's aimed at players willing to invest real time into learning hero matchups, itemization, and team coordination, and who enjoy long, high-stakes team-based matches over quicker, more casual sessions.
