What is Hades?
Hades is a single-player roguelike action game where players control Zagreus, son of the Greek god of the underworld, as he repeatedly attempts to escape his father's realm and reach Mount Olympus. Each escape attempt, or "run," takes Zagreus through a series of procedurally arranged chambers filled with enemies, culminating in a boss encounter before reaching the surface. The core loop is built around repetition with purpose: dying isn't a failure state so much as the expected rhythm of the game, since each run — successful or not — grants resources and permanent upgrades that make future attempts more viable. Combat is fast and weapon-driven, with a handful of distinct weapon types that can be further customized through boons granted by Olympian gods, which combine to create different build strategies each run. What sets Hades apart within the roguelike genre is its narrative structure: dialogue, relationships, and story beats evolve across repeated runs rather than resetting, so the act of dying and retrying is woven directly into the plot instead of breaking it. Combined with hand-crafted art and voice acting throughout, it gives the game a strong narrative hook uncommon for the genre. It's entirely single-player, with sessions ranging from a single 20-30 minute run to much longer stretches chasing a full clear or story progression.
