A reunion nobody saw coming

Resident Evil Requiem launched back in February, and its story is actually set this October, twenty-eight years after Raccoon City got wiped off the map. You play as FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, a shaky newcomer stuck in first-person and rationing every bullet, but the game keeps cutting to a second lead: DSO agent Leon S. Kennedy, back in third-person and handling things like the horror-movie veteran he is. You can actually flip the camera angle for either character whenever you want, which sounds like a gimmick until you realize it's the whole point: one half of the game is built to make you feel helpless, the other to make you feel capable, and Capcom lets you pick which fear you'd rather sit with.

The numbers it's still putting up

Launch weekend alone, Requiem pulled in more than 344,000 concurrent players on Steam, over double what the Resident Evil 4 remake managed and a new high for the whole franchise. Nine months later it hasn't cooled off much.

  • Launch-weekend concurrent players on Steam: over 344,000, a Resident Evil franchise record
  • Sold five million copies in five days, Capcom's fastest-selling Resident Evil ever
  • Current Steam rating: Overwhelmingly Positive, roughly 97% positive across more than 50,000 reviews
  • Currently discounted on Steam to $48.99 from its $69.99 list price

Who it's for

If you want a Resident Evil game that actually commits to being scary for half its runtime instead of just the first act, and you don't mind switching mental gears between a character who can barely fight back and one who absolutely can, Requiem is worth it at the current discount.

Our take

Requiem works because Capcom finally let a Resident Evil game be two games at once, a slow first-person survival nightmare for Grace and a familiar third-person action romp for Leon, instead of picking one lane and forcing everyone into it. The fact that it's still holding "Overwhelmingly Positive" nine months out, well past the usual launch-hype cooldown, suggests the dual-perspective structure actually holds up over a full playthrough rather than just the opening hour. The real question now is whether the rumored story DLC can repeat that trick without feeling like padding on top of an ending that already closes the book pretty firmly.
